In July 2006, Good Shepherd Housing
Foundation began a new program, The Transitional Housing Partnership
Program, partially funded through the Department of Housing and Urban
Development. Six homeless families are participating, living in
six scattered site apartments.
Participants are receiving two years of housing with
intensive support services and a requirement that the adult participant
in each family go to school at Northern Virginia Community College
Medical Arts Program or an equivalent program. Financial support
for school will be provided so that the adult students will be able to
leave dead end low paying jobs and work only part time while going to
school and parenting.
It takes from $20 to $23 per hour to rent a two-bedroom
apartment in Prince William County. Low income families must
increase income in order to obtain and retain housing in this area.
Therefore, it makes sense to do every thing possible to support this
goal through effective supports and case management.
Apartments have been leased with an agreement that
program renters will be able to retain their apartments upon completion
of the program. This is done to relieve the family from the
expense and upheaval of moving again. |
